There would be many people living in a castle: not just the lord of the castle and his family, but others too. The burgmannen (castle guards) were soldiers and defended the castle. The burgvogt (keeper) made sure that everything was well organised. Peasants supplied the castle with food, and cooks prepared it. Maids and servants kept the place clean and looked after the animals.

Depending on the size of the castle, there would sometimes also be a chaplain or a monk for the chapel. Craftsmen such as smiths and carpenters repaired things and kept the castle in good shape. Everybody helped out, so that life together in the castle ran smoothly.
