Life in the castle in the Middle Ages
This area of the exhibition invites visitors, especially children, to discover what life was like in a mediaeval castle.
Who lived behind these thick walls?
What was their everyday life like?
What did they eat?
What kind of clothes did they wear?
What duties did a knight have?
Elisabeth of Lorraine, who lived and ruled on the schlossfelsen in the 15th century, is particularly worthy of attention. During her regency she translated French chivalric novels into German and is thus regarded as the founder of the German prose novel. She thus not only contributed to shaping the culture of her own times, but also had a formative influence on our concept of the ideal knight: brave, loyal, heroic. Illustrations accompanying those stories show how people pictured the idealised life of a knight in the late Middle Ages – a fascinating insight for both children and adults.
