Items found on the schlossfelsen

Armaments at the castle

In the Middle Ages too, the development of weapons was decisive when it came to attacking and defending territories. Excavations on the Schlossplatz have revealed a crossbow nut – part of the tensioning mechanism on a crossbow – and a bascinet helmet. These finds originate from different periods.

The bascinet, from the 14th century, is particularly valuable, since objects of this kind are rarely so well preserved. The crossbow nut, from the 14th / 15th century, is an important component of the weapons technology of that time. Two complementary replicas illustrate the transition from hand weapons to firearms. The accompanying video demonstrates their penetrating power.

The crossbow was feared for its penetrating power, and it was also suitable for less experienced fighters. This replica is based on a design from the first half of the 15th century. The crossbow nut, made from an antler, was part of a complex tensioning mechanism, which held the tensed bowstring and released it when the trigger mechanism was actuated.

Arquebus
Iron
15th century
Reconstructed by Patrick Tanner

With the arquebus, the age of firearms began. Shots were fired with gunpowder and lead balls. The hook on the muzzle cushioned the recoil by being attached to a wooden buffer. Because their penetrating power was even greater, firearms like this began to replace the crossbow more and more in the 15th / 16th century.

Bascinet

The bascinet offered reliable protection for the head and neck against arrows and blows. It was forged from a piece of steel. This one is presumed to have originated in Italy, but it was modified in the 15th century. A rare and thus valuable find. At present, only about 15 helmets of this kind are known to exist worldwide.
